Sugarcane, also known simply as cane, is a monocotyledonous plant in the grass family (Poaceae), specifically belonging to the genus Saccharum. Sugarcane is a crop that can be cultivated in temperate, subtropical, and tropical regions. It is primarily used as a raw material for producing cane sugar and can also be processed to extract ethanol for bioenergy, as well as being used as livestock feed. Sugarcane is produced in over a hundred countries worldwide, with Brazil, India, China, Cuba, and Thailand being the largest producers. The most commonly consumed variety of sugarcane in China is bamboo cane. Among the grasses, there are many important economic crops, including corn, wheat, rice, legumes, oats, sorghum, and various forage crops. Sugarcane is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia and New Guinea, as well as some temperate areas.
