Chili pepper, also known as horn pepper, long pepper, shan jiao zai (in Taiwanese), shan jiao (in Teochew), spicy pepper, foreign pepper, foreign ginger, foreign ginger (in Taiwanese), sea pepper, hot pepper, pepper, and Qin pepper, is a general term for the fruit of the Capsicum genus in the nightshade family (scientific name: Capsicum). Among them, the most common annual chili pepper (C. annuum) has many cultivated varieties and subspecies, such as bell pepper (C. a. var. grossum) and facing heaven pepper (C. a. var. conoides), among others.
