Bitter melon (scientific name: Momordica charantia), also known as balsam pear, bitter gourd, or凉瓜 (liang gua), is a tropical and subtropical climbing plant in the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). Bitter melon is native to Africa. Wild or semi-domesticated varieties spread across Asia during prehistoric times, and it is likely that it was fully domesticated in Southeast Asia.
